Unpacking the Student Loan Disbursement Delays
In recent times, there has been growing frustration and dissatisfaction among students, parents, and other stakeholders as the disbursement of student loans promised by the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, faces yet another setback.
The Students Loan Fund (SLF): A Noble Initiative
The Students Loan Fund (SLF), a commendable initiative aimed at providing interest-free loans to disadvantaged students, has encountered persistent challenges, missing the initial target set for January 2024.
Despite the assurance from President Tinubu, who officially signed the SLF into law in June 2023, the delay has left aspiring students and their families in a state of uncertainty. Originally slated to commence between September and October 2023, the program confronted unforeseen obstacles, leading to the revised timeline of January 2024.
Lack of Updates
According to the Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, preparations for the scheme’s launch were completed, including the finalization of the Student Loan scheme website and technical plans to facilitate the kickoff. However, reports from Leadership newspaper indicate a lack of updates on the subject since the minister’s statement.
An unnamed official from the Ministry of Education shed some light on the situation, citing expansion hurdles as a reason behind the delay in the student loan initiation. “I think the delay in the initiation of student loans arises due to obstacles in the expansion process, which hinders the timely takeoff of this financial support for students,” the official stated.
What is NANS Saying?
NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, echoed similar sentiments, mentioning that the delay is attributed to the expansion of the loan scheme. He expressed the students’ anticipation for the committee to engage with stakeholders, such as NANS, to kickstart the program.
Meanwhile, Nigerian students are urging the government to commence the student loan scheme, emphasizing its potential to unlock doors to education for those aspiring to a brighter future. Parents, too, are urging the government to expedite the student loan initiative to support their children’s pursuit of higher education.
A Collective Call for Action
The collective sentiment is a call for transparency, efficiency, and a swift resolution of the challenges hindering the commencement of the Student Loan Fund, ensuring that the promised support reaches the deserving students without further delay.

Hmm! It’s not an ideal thing to bring about loan for students ohh, that’s like temptation because when they get not to pay , they would be held responsible and then something must be used for collateral and instead of the SLFs to look like help , it ll be looking like a disaster…
It’s better students and parents work hard and strive harder to thrive than to depend on a loan that only God knows how you would get the money to pay back when it’s due….
And again, come to think of it, why is the government still delaying? They really need to sit and think and meditate on this their idea before implementing it 😅 God will help us ohh
I totally agree. If the government can give 10 students 500,000 then isn’t it better to use the 5,000,000 to purchase and install needed equipments in government owned institutions. If educational equipments can be provided (I.e laptops, textbooks, laboratory supplies, etc) then at least tuition fees would be cheaper and the only expense a student would have to worry about would probably be accommodation, which by the way could still be handled by the government of course. And if not, then cafeteria should be available for feeding. Wouldn’t it be cheaper using your school Id to buy food than purchasing off campus. I have much to say but primarily I think instead of giving out loans which have a potential negative effect, it would benefit everyone if the whole education system is (if not free) more affordable. Let’s not even talk about filling lecturer’s pockets for one to be able to get a document without the necessary “connections”. So help us God
It’s a bold steps taking by the government, we hope for transparency and good methods of delivering.
It the process that’s taking time, the government have good intention concerning the students education during this period.
The postponement and lack of transparency really destroyed some students plans, some needed it crucially at some point but the loan hasn’t been disbursed yet causing these students to go take up high interest loans, I know someone who did, really unfair

The government majority of students couldn’t afford their tuition fee because of the recent increments in tuition fees both state and federal universities, rather than providing the student with loan, they should come up with the initiation of cutting cost in tuition fees or providing grant to student who really needs it
I think this thing is a good initiative paneled and saddled by wrong minds, imagine where the former minister of education is right now, a practical illustration of “bad mind”.
Still on that note-bad mind-i think the project lacks proper follow up and a sincere desire to accomplish it, which spells out by the height of it’s delay.
Above all I pray it accomplishes it’s real essence and not be an opportunity for “bad minds” to veil a service to their silk-stocking progenies instead of the published intended beneficiaries.
Some people got the disbursement as at June but I was told the portal is currently close. Others applied but there loan has not been approved. May God help us in this country because the whole thing is frustrating.
Actually, for me there is nothing much to say but to admonished the Authorities and those in charge to ensure that they are capable, able and willing to start and complete such tasks they are embarking rather than start and later makes people see or say something about their processes or tagged everything with negative words and with disappointment, I will urge the Authority to be responsible and up-to-date in all things.
I’m really skeptical about the sustainability and accountability of the Student loan project. But I’m hopeful it works out well as proposed by the federal government.

these kind of strategy to support education in Nigeria has not been something that is familiar to the government and it budgeting planes over the years, therefore it may take time to actualize

We face a detrimental problem with leadership, Due to the recent increments in tuition fees in both State and federal institute, Government should try to reduce the fees, the SLF is Good but, to be frank we live in an economy where to get a decent job is very difficult and most students will not find it easy to repay the loan. The best solution is for the government to help students by reducing their fees

I think the student loan is good but everything that has a good part will always have a bad part. I read the process you have too go through if eventually you won’t be able too pay back after two years of NYSC and it’s a long one , some people won’t want too go through all this processes and it will eventually lead to a big problem. I feel the government can still do something about this education fund rather than a loan why not give student grants or apply the subsidy method where government helps pay half of students fees.

As much as it’s a good initiative, payment might be a bit of burden after school with the unemployment rate out there now .
The government should help the student because many students are been dropped out because of lack of finance to cater for their educational needs like school fees, money for textbooks and even feeding.
Thank you for the updates on the student loan. But as at the this year(2025), reading through the procedures and repayment process is quite a hectic one. While I understand the government intentions to provide Education for all students, I really think this is not a good move. Because I am very sure 60% won’t be able to pay off the loan easily and it might cause a long setbacks in their lives. Our Universities today have series of courses that people would end up studying and end up jobless after graduation. This is because there is sometimes little or not enough infrastructure to make this courses applicable to our everyday lives here in Nigeria. Job opportunities are also scarce I’m various field our country, rather than spend this huge money on student loan, it would be better off to invest in our school system to make it better than what it is now, and also create more job opportunities by investing in companies and industries that will also benefit Nigerians.
I am still waiting for improvement with this student loan and I hope soon Government will start giving students in higher institution grants

It’s so depressing that we have the money but unable to use it all because of politicians and people in power. That is it, we are our problem.
Creation of more job opportunities would sure be a valid way of easily paying back the student loan.
It’s really a good idea and a positive step by the federal government, but left for me I think making available basic educational amenities in institutions across the Nations, providing cafeteria’s where students can eat with the student IDs at least once daily, providing study equipment that will enable more practicals in our tertiary institutions would have been better. The federal governments intention is a good one but of course this is Nigeria, I am pretty sure 40% of this student loan beneficiaries will be students who or whose families would have been totally capable of funding their education, but they will still apply thereby providing fewer slots for people who are genuinely in need..

The article is a nice one but I have a few to say. The government is doing the right thing but might be going in the wrong direction. To elaborate, most student might see this as an opportunity but for some it is a trap in the sense that a large amount of student might not be able to pay back the money which they most have borrowed. Some might even spend it on other things like feeding but only entrepreneurship mindset student can actually use that money wisely. So this is humble feeling regarding this article. Thanks.

From my own perspective, I feel that if the government actually wants to engage in this “Interest-free loan”, there should be a limit for it… like let’s say, at most 200,000 naira and the details, like NIN of the students should be accurately gotten. Also, when the fixed expiry date is reached, an Interestshould be incurred
With these information required, students will think twice before receiving loans and work hard to be able to pay back, as they know that their debt could cause a lot of implications and missed opportunities

I personally do not buy the idea of the SLF program. Instead of issuing out a loan to students which would make them indebted to the government with no guarantee of the means to pay-back, these funds could have been granted to the students . Increment in tuition fees of federal universities is as a result of little or no assistance from the government. If the government could channel these funds into equipping these universities, the tuition fees would become more affordable.
If these students are really going to pay-back, I can only imagine the financial burden on their families.

Actually the SLF has not being of a benefit to me yet cause I applied for it last semester just to pay up my tuition fee but my loan wasn’t approved.
So I think the SLF is not well structured enough because there are a lot of students that applied but couldn’t get the loan and if such student does not have another means to raise the money then he/she might not pay the fee until the school portal closes
