Unpacking the Student Loan Disbursement Delays

In recent times, there has been growing frustration and dissatisfaction among students, parents, and other stakeholders as the disbursement of student loans promised by the Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, faces yet another setback.
The Students Loan Fund (SLF): A Noble Initiative
The Students Loan Fund (SLF), a commendable initiative aimed at providing interest-free loans to disadvantaged students, has encountered persistent challenges, missing the initial target set for January 2024.
Despite the assurance from President Tinubu, who officially signed the SLF into law in June 2023, the delay has left aspiring students and their families in a state of uncertainty. Originally slated to commence between September and October 2023, the program confronted unforeseen obstacles, leading to the revised timeline of January 2024.
Lack of Updates
According to the Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, preparations for the scheme’s launch were completed, including the finalization of the Student Loan scheme website and technical plans to facilitate the kickoff. However, reports from Leadership newspaper indicate a lack of updates on the subject since the minister’s statement.
An unnamed official from the Ministry of Education shed some light on the situation, citing expansion hurdles as a reason behind the delay in the student loan initiation. “I think the delay in the initiation of student loans arises due to obstacles in the expansion process, which hinders the timely takeoff of this financial support for students,” the official stated.
What is NANS Saying?
NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, echoed similar sentiments, mentioning that the delay is attributed to the expansion of the loan scheme. He expressed the students’ anticipation for the committee to engage with stakeholders, such as NANS, to kickstart the program.
Meanwhile, Nigerian students are urging the government to commence the student loan scheme, emphasizing its potential to unlock doors to education for those aspiring to a brighter future. Parents, too, are urging the government to expedite the student loan initiative to support their children’s pursuit of higher education.
A Collective Call for Action
The collective sentiment is a call for transparency, efficiency, and a swift resolution of the challenges hindering the commencement of the Student Loan Fund, ensuring that the promised support reaches the deserving students without further delay.

The student loan is a good one and it’s gonna help the less prove and those struggling financially, but even with that i think it will be better if the government will upgrade the school system and facilities. For example In most institutions especially for those studying Engineering courses they don’t even have materials, apparatus and equipment to have good practicals.
The delay is due to the expansion of the loan. Hmm the government needs to match its promises with action especially in a time when many students are struggling with rising tuition and cost of living.
Will be waiting for the loan
Thou the gov have not been keeping their promises lately
Many people finds this Student loan as a deception but I think it’s cool
The delay has course a lot of people to give up on government
Great😊
Lack of checkmating the SLF
It am healthy scheme but the government is not healthy
The STF is a good development and I think we should we should have hope on the government meanwhile effort to always remind them of the benefits of the scheme to some homes, should always be a priority
The delay actually caused a lot of issues for many students mad led to set back in their academic work.
Although I noticed they’ve recently started disbursing for batch 4
The delay was not fully explained.
Many students in my school are coming very disappointment from the failure for not getting the students from the appropriate authority.
I hope there will be a great help and support for the students to the loan as expected.
Very helpful
Thank you so much for this
Thanks again and again
Let’s see how it’s gonna turnout admits the turmoils
It’s really too bad that the disbursement is slowed. I hope things get better. Thank you CRF
The loan is a good one, to help students who are on the verge of dropping out
The student loan scheme is more than just money, it’s about hope, opportunity, and Nigeria’s future.
Though it’s finally kicked off, earlier delays weakened students’ trust.
The rollout must now be transparent, fair, and truly accessible.
We appreciate the effort, but will the government sustain it?
The loan actually helps lot of students
Ohh.
I see reasons why!
Very eye opening
Very educative
Thanks CRF for this wonderful information
The ministers name is Yusuf Sununu, got it
I think the loan is quite helpful but they aren’t being timely enough with it, They can start disbursement after school deadline for school fees payment which is bad. Also only a selected few gets the privilege not all students 😔.
Is the SLF the same as NELFUND? It sounds like the same scheme
Thank you.
We hope there will be a system which will make this effective and efficient for everyone
Thank you very much for this. I really hope the government keeps to their promises because a lot of families are waiting and hoping for the opportunity as it’s a better option for them. One advantage of it is that it’s interest free and they can pay in later years. I hope the government sees this as an issue of utmost priority as a number of promising and bright students need this opportunity as a platform for greatness ahead!
I have registered for the one stated for my school Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba, but we are yet to receive ours… It’s quite sad, although I’m still prayerfully anticipating cos this loan means alot to my education and life 😌🙏… I join my plea with other students, that the government should please begin the disbursement… Several life’s depends on this!
Sometimes due to the bulky application, while some promises come true by applicants following the necessary steps
I really hope the government keeps their promise as it will help a lot of students to achieve their dreams
We have a similar issue in my Uni (nelfund), most students avoid loans because of the delay.. smh
But this post is very insightful, thank you so much😇
The SLF is a great initiative which I have benefited from, while there has been some holdbacks in the disbursement, I still think the federal government is doing a fantastic job
I’m hoping the government will release this loan quickly because some of us,the students don’t have anywhere to run to for help.
The SLF initiative is a good one but to avoid the delay in the disbursement as promised by the Government, structures should be put in place and adequate planning is also important. This is because students are looking forward to it and they are facing real financial challenges as regards their education. The Government fulfilling their promise early will help people to trust them more.
I hope the Government can keep their promises
I think a lot of this kind of issues are expect when it involves a lot of people and the workload is not small.
So, parents and students are to wait for the final open and availability of the agenda.
It is a good thing, it is just the matter of time.
I hope that the loan will be released in hand as early as possible thanks CRF
The government should find a way as fast as possible to relieve and help Nigerian students cause as the cost of living is going higher, Many children are finding it hard as possible to live talkless of going to school
I think that provided the government are keeping their intention to keep their promise and the delay is due to a good & helpful course, that is really what matters. The goals getting implemented and even through this really insightful naira and sense series, calls for a big kudos and more to come!
I think the delay is part good and part the other, thinking about it, it serves some well while it didn’t serve others, all the same I think the loan processess should be hastened so it can come in timely for those who needs it when they need it.
I won’t lie it’s a very good initiative, but I really don’t get what they mean by expansion…… Is it that they’re having trouble in bringing a lot of different students to take the loan?
This repeated delay in launching the student loan scheme is deeply frustrating and undermines trust in the government’s promises. We were given a clear timeline, and to see it pushed back with only vague excuses like “expansion hurdles” is disheartening. This lack of transparency and urgency shows a disregard for the financial struggles students face daily. We need action, not more empty promises, as our academic futures cannot be put on hold indefinitely.
I think the delay may cause a disrupt in the future of disadvantaged students. I really hope and pray that the government will maximize their efforts to make this work out for the good and benefit of the students.
I really appreciate the Governmental organizations because of their efforts in ensuring that every student gets a quality education.
One of the challenges is, those who receive the scholarship are mainly those who are not in need of it, children of politicians and ministerial workers.
This is because of improper management of funds by those appointed by the government.
I hereby suggest that the government should properly scrutinize anyone who is willing to take the position of fund disbursement for honesty and transparency.
Please this is my humble suggestion.
Well, I’ll say it’s Nigerian government just being Nigerian government. In as much as they didn’t keep to the slated timelines, at least they eventually came through for most of us, students. For a start, they’ve done wonderfully well so far, just a few more bug fixing on their websites and also keeping to the slated date for monthly disbursement of student upkeep and we’ll be okay.
I believe they will keep to their promise.Parents student and stakeholders should just be patient with the government.
What an insightful article. And also I’ll be so pleased if the government can actually disburse the accredited students loans faster as many hopes are placed on this said loans.
It’s a shame that such an important scheme has been subpar lately. When it first began, it was quite efficient but unfortunately, following the normal trend in our country, it has also been disappointing.
I think the government should prioritize the education sector more.
These delays can be very frustrating for students
